The Photo That Started It All
It was when I saw this picture of me on Facebook that I decided to change. I spent a year meandering around before I lost any weight. And it took me another year before I finally found what worked for me.
The After Photo
That’s me on the right after I lost all the weight, with my bff/partner in crime/insert your favorite cliched synonym for husband here. We’ve got three awesome kids, have been married since 2004, and have lived in 3 different states (now full time RVing). The man is a saint, and never ever said anything unkind to me about my weight throughout my whole journey.
How I Gained The Weight
My story is typical of most women with weight issues. I was a chubby kid, I tried every diet, I sometimes had success, but I always gained it back. I was my slimmest when I got married, but then I had three kids. With each pregnancy I gained too much weight. I lost all 60 pounds I had gained with my first, but then I only lost about 30 of the 50 I gained with my second. And I didn’t really lose any of the weight after the birth of my third. If you look at me in the picture that started it all (above), I look like I could be pregnant, but at that point my “baby” was almost 2.
Figuring Out What Didn’t Work
Although the day I saw that photo was my turning point, it took me almost a year to start any meaningful change. The reason it took me so long was that I knew all the changes I made needed to be sustainable. It sucks to gain back the weight you work so hard to lose, and every time it happens it makes you a little more hopeless the next time you try. I ended up trying several different things that didn’t really work, which in time I’ll detail on the blog, but here’s a list:
- Running 3 Miles A Day
- Crossfit
- Counting Calories
- Weighing My Food
- Sprinting
- HIIT
- Frequent Meals
- Higher Protein / Lower Carb
- Inconsistency
Success With Walking and Intermittent Fasting
I finally found what worked for me. I dropped 65 pounds total, with 46 of that happening in 11 months after I really started to hone in on my rules and what worked. Briefly, that was eating one meal and walking six miles every day. Except on Sunday, in which I eat whatever I want and walk six miles. The best part is I have maintained this weight loss for almost a year now, with what feels like very little effort to me. I wanted to share what worked for me, in the hopes that it will inspire other people who are trying to lose weight. I certainly don’t think this is the only, or even the best way, but it’s what worked for me.
After Finding Success
Losing weight and keeping it off has changed my life for the better in many ways. It helped me to regain a sense of adventure in my life. I got up the courage to start learning American Sign Language. I got my real estate license. My husband and I published a book about infant potty training, a practice we had done with all three of our children. I started a coffee review Youtube channel with my husband called Coffee Coffee Coffee. I started this website, 6 Miles To Supper, in the hopes that I could encourage other people on their weight loss journey, by showing a real, honest look at what a weight loss journey looks like, warts and all. I wrote The Laid Back Guide to Intermittent Fasting, and I built and published a course: Intermittent Fasting For Weight Loss 101. It is the course I wish I had when I was first starting my journey back in March of 2014.
And I have had the courage to start making art, which you can check out here: My artist’s profile on Fine Art America
My hope is, if you’ve found that your weight is holding you back, you can see from my story that you can totally lose weight too. And you can do it on your own terms, and in your own way, just like I did.
